Application to the Nursing Process

To have a better grasp regarding the Application of Parse's Theory in the Nursing Process, let us try to watch a video below and reflect on some few points.

Diagram of Parse's Theory of Human Becoming based on the three major themes

Parse’s Theory of Human Becoming is founded on the basis of ontology and rises from three major assumptions: meaning, rhythmicity and transcendence. Each concept has three fundamental paradoxes under it. Paradoxes are not problems that needed fixing, but, are lived-all-at-once pattern preferences. These are ways humans live their chosen meanings (Parse, 2012).
Health, therefore is a lived experience. It is a process of becoming and a way of living as a result of the paradoxes under the concepts of meaning, rhythmicity and transcendence, chosen by man that is an open, unitary being coexistent with the environment. Health is a unique experience of man, not fixed but dynamic and continuously changing. It is also an unusual embodiment of value priorities set by man. Ergo, health is not a cause-effect mechanism as the opposite of disease or achievement of well-being (Walker, 1996).
Now, how can we apply the Parse’s Theory in the Nursing Process? Remember that the goal of nursing in the human becoming perspective is quality of life. The nurse should express true presence in bearing witness and being with others in their changing health patterns. True presence is a deliberate and intentional reflective love, with art that is founded in a strong and scientific knowledge base (Parse, 2012).
Man freely chooses with any situation he is facing, to create structured personal meanings, to live according to the paradoxical rhythm and to initiate transcendence in different directions in ways that are unpredictable and innovative (Parse, 2012). The nurse will be there to bear witness to this lived experience- illuminating meanings, synchronizing rhythms and mobilizing transcendence (Walker, 1996).

Assessment

The use of Parse’s theory in Nursing Assessment involves identifying meaning, patterns of relating and paradoxes lived by a client in a certain situation (Walker, 1996).
Example: In the current health situation of the client, what are his value priorities? How did he live through the situation and how did he handle the situation?

Nursing Diagnosis and Intervention

Parse’s Theory includes some diagnostic statements such as:
·         Revealing-Concealing Imaging (Living regret if unrealized hopes and dreams)
·         Enabling-limiting Valuing (Experiencing forgiveness for past failures)
·         Languaging connecting-separating (Expressing trepidation about new roles)
·         Revising relational patterns through lived conformity-nonconformity
·         Esteeming togetherness with others while pushing for and resisting change
·         Celebrating emergent transformations amidst the familiar and unfamiliar.

This means that nursing interventions under Parse’s theory do not seek to fix a problem rather, having the ability to see patient’s perspective and to “be with”/bearing witness with the patient to guide them toward their desired health outcome (Walker, 1996).

Outcome Evaluation

Again, the outcome of Parse’s Theory is more on the lived experience and how man can achieve a good quality of life depending on a man’s perceived meaning, lived paradoxes and moving forward to a different direction (Walker, 1996).
