Relevance to my practice

Parse theory is relevant in the field of Pediatric Nursing.In my day to day practice,children as our patients,unable to talk and helpless for self care.Dr. Parse emphasized the purpose of her theory that we will focus on humans as living unity.Rendering nursing care that meets the physiologic needs,love and safety gives color to that theory.

Relevance to Nursing

Parses theory promotes the patient as a major decision maker. We as a nurse should give the patient choices on what she think her body can take to promote health. For example, the patient is asthmatic. We as a nurse often give to the patient sets of prescription and let the patient believe that by taking this prescription it will heal his disease. We do that specifically to finish the job, without caring for the patient.  It deals with the question to the patient what does he thinks would best work for him. The theory Focus on human dignity and freedom, as "man-living-health" to "human becoming.

Application to my Nursing Practice

The application of this theory encompasses most of the decision-making in my current nursing practice. Our team must think carefully choose a decision that suits their individuality and is for their best interest to provide good quality of life.  

The best example that I can cite is the End of Life care for our patients.

In this plan of care, we do not do nursing intervention that promotes health or cure illness, but instead we act as a support tool to make their lives be comfortable in their remaining days and give quality care by giving their preferences and last wishes.

We treat each patient as a unique individual, and each of them has their own preferences. 

We can achieve this by:

1. Asking their preferred place to die
2. Adequate pain control and symptoms management
3. Provide physiologic support like home oxygen and adequate hydration
4. Providing equipment to your house to meet you needs like stair lift, and pressure relieving mattress

How relevant is the Human Becoming Theory into the practice of Nursing?

        We, nurses, have an integral role in patient’s care but we are not just here to assist patient to recovery or fix the problems they are encountering, we are here to understand them, to be involved in their care not only physically, but also emotionally. Parse’s Human Becoming Theory guides our practice to quality of life, the totality paradigm that stating that man is a combination of biological, psychological, and spiritual factors. This is an approach that focuses on totality of man. 

       Being a practicing nurse, every day is a new experience, for in every patient we might encounter, they may have same illness and with same complaint but we must remember that they also have different experiences that can affect their perception to illness that’s why we also must have different approach to each one of them. Each individual is unique making him different from me and you. The Nurse-Patient relationships will blossom if we will take into consideration that patient has control on his life, that they set goals for themselves and that we, nurses,  are here to help them achieve those goals. This theory reminds us that we are here to do things WITH OUR PATIENT and not doing things FOR OUR PATIENT.

Importance to My Practice

Health promotion is the utmost concern of nurse. The very core of nursing is to help patients but also nurses should take to consideration the environmental and occupational risk that comes with the profession. Moreover, nurse could be more efficient with their duty by being guided by theoretical frameworks. These are designed to align our goals with reality people experience, as a fundamental tool to outline health interventions. Human becoming theory highlights the totality paradigm that states man is a combination of biological, psychological, and spiritual factors that will greatly help nurses dealing with patients.

As an Operating Room nurse, and I could use Parse’s theory to always make sure patients are comfortable especially before going to their operation. This theory tells us that we may have study different diseases and their interventions for it but caring for each patient is individualized.  Each patient is unique and has undergone different things in their life hence, their response differs from one another. I guess that for me is one amazing thing about us nurses. We are the ones who can first assess what makes them anxious or how that treatment works. From my experience, I observed that patients are more open towards verbalizing their feelings to nurses.

Human becoming theory has three major assumptions, meaning, rythmicity and transcendence. On the first assumption clarifying the meaning is identified as the practical dimension of nursing care, in which the nurses guide individuals and families to relate the meanings of a situation and make them more explicit, based on each person's experiences. Nurses could exercise it by building rapport every rounds. We must see to it that our patients co participate in health interventions. Patients get to choose and decide what they think is best for them. Nurse together with healthcare team are facilitators.

Second principle was rhythmicity that, by experiencing the paradoxes, the person reveals a bit of him/herself and, at the same time, hides other parts, that is, the human being gradually reveals him/herself in the transformation process. I recall one pediatric patient, her mother asks me if the surgery is already finished then answered her. After a minute her grandmother turns to ask me again. Then I asked them simply how long you have known that your child has tonsillitis and had told me stories about her child. By the end of my shift she thank me and her anxiety was relieved for that moment. One simple act but then it had made a difference. Our role as health care providers doesn’t end with our patients but also extends to their loved ones especially here in the Philippines.

Third Principle is transcendence, driving the individual to move beyond. The nurse helps the person in the process of planning changes in the health patterns that are experienced. It is the motivation to establish quality of life deriving from a mobilization process, to the extent that it stimulates and facilitates the change in life habits and standards adopted in the individual sphere of the human being-environment. This is where nurses conduct health teachings. It is also individualized. Nurses must be aware the patients environment, work and the support he/she has. That is where nurses based their health teachings.

Consequently, environmental and occupational nursing practice converges in their focus on the promotion of quality of life, varying according to each human being's worldview. No matter how tedious the things to do we must always remember that nurses should look at patients as co-author of health. Human environment is a process and not cause-effect.

Relevance to my practice (Why this theory is important to me)

    According to the theory, nurses live in the art of human becoming in presences with the unfolding of meaning, synchronizing rhythms and transcendence. By focusing on this three the nurses can give patients greater respect, autonomy, and empowerment.

    In my practice as a nurse, the concept of human becoming can be very impuortant. I would like to begin with the paradigm of Meaning. As a nurse, I must understand that patients will have different interpretations of words and nonverbal cues because they have their own unique background. Hence, situation of illness, injuries, or life changing conditions will be interpreted differently by each patient.  Because of this, rather than making assumptions on predicting patient’s condition based on the previous cases, I would have to ask the patient directly about his or her situation. The difference in perception should be recognized and whatever the patient expresses must be respected.

    For the paradigm of Rhythmicity, as a nurse, I should embrace the fact that patients will not reveal every facet about their personality in any one situation. These patients will only give a glimpse of some parts that are relevant to the time, place and person. We, nurses, must develop trust in order to make the client feel more comfortable in our presence. Thus the client will be more willing to reveal themselves. As a nurse, I understand the reality that every situation has a different set of prospects, challenges or limits to the patient that may be new to him or her. It is my responsibility as a nurse to help the patient understand these new conditions by discussing it to them.
    The nurse’s goal is to empower the patient throughout the process without manipulating the direction the patient will take, and respect the path the patient chooses. The paradigm of Transcendence guides my practice with the realization that my behavior and words will affect the patient in either negative or positive ways. It is my responsibility to enable them to organize their thoughts and feelings regarding a situation so that they can set priorities and make decisions on their own.

    Overall, the human becoming theory is relevant to nursing practice. The theory gives nurses the ability to see the patient's perspective, which allows the nurse to be with the patient, and guide him or her towards health goals.

Relevance to My Practice

In the clinical area, we, nurses, encounter patients with different health problems and they are individuals with different physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. These individuals have different goals toward well-being and we are there to provide support and interventions for them to achieve these set goals. We must understand that each individual has unique experiences that mold his person and views in life. As client advocates, we formulate interventions designed uniquely to each individual to assist them satisfy their desired goals and promote independence and control over their lives.

Relevance to My Practice

Parse’s theory commands a more profound meaning to the practice of nursing by first understanding what health experiences mean to the pt and their family &/or caregivers. The way how they perceive health and the quality of life best guides the care plan applicable to them.

This is particularly relevant in the care of palliative patients and their family. If nurses understand their lived experiences, then they are able provide the best supportive care. Knowing that “fixing” is not always the answer, the next probable options would have to be attentive presence. Simply being present means a lot to dying patients and grieving families alike.

It also teaches nurses not to pass judgements when family choose not to bear witness to their loved one’s suffering; because there are people who simply choose not to live it. And for those who do, live it, we as nurses must understand that it is a critical race against time of making the best of the last moments.

Parse’s theory of human becoming teaches us how to be humane.

Reflection

I think my work is an invitation to nurses to think about nursing in a different way to look at human beings and value them as co-author of health.  – Rosemarie Parse

When our group decided to make a blog about Dr. Parse I wasn’t even sure if I can contribute something, I didn’t have an idea about her work and contributions so asked I myself what was unique about her theory which made our group to choose her.

I was able to review and reflect on human becoming theory. How she wanted to influence nurses to be a meaningful person, she came up with her simple easy ways to apply principles such as:

“Structuring meaning dimensionally is co creating reality through the languaging of valuing and imaging. This principle proposes that persons structure or choose the meaning of their realities and that the choosing occurs at levels that are not always known explicitly means that one person cannot decide the significance of something for another person and does not even understand the meaning through the expression of his own views, concern, and dreams.

“cocreating rhythmical patterns of relating is living the paradoxical unity-concealing and enabling-limiting while connecting-separating – means that persons create patterns in life and these patterns tell about personal meanings and values, persons change their patters when they integrate new priorities, ideas, hopes and dreams .

Transcendence- person are always engaging with and choosing from infinite possibilities. The choices reflect the person’s ways of moving and changing in the process of becoming.

As a telemetry nurse I am mostly in collaboration with the patient with regards to their health, beginning from admission till their discharge and I’m so glad that most of the time they share their happiness, fears and family, that they will even say when will be your off? Coz I want to be discharge before your off, or ask favors like will you still my nurse after operation? A lot of heartwarming simple gestures from the patient but it really make my heart to have dysrhythmias.  When our patient become our patient we commonly share our part of human being they are telling us I need you and you need me be prepare to be truly present at hand through immersion.

Application to My Practice

Parse’s theory of human becoming utilizes the principle that to achieve optimum health for our patients, one, the nurse, must see thru the patient’s perspective and must learn to be with the patient. Being with the patient doesn’t only mean being there physically for the patient but also emotionally, intellectually, psychologically and socially. Both nurse and patient have their own perspective of health and most often than not, these perspectives are incongruent to each other. Both  must meet halfway to achieve a common goal. Individual differences are not a hindrance to open and co exists with one another. It will be difficult, yes, but with respect and open mindedness, it is possible.

As a nurse, I am able to treat patients in a manner that is tailored to their particular health needs for each patient coming from different environmental background. Human Becoming can be very useful in long term care of patient because it can help better understanding where the patient is coming from all facets of an individual.

Her theory on human becoming serves as a foundation to understand holistic nursing practice. It creates the opportunity for nurses, and even individuals involved along with the patient to discover approaches and application of various ways to get back into shape. It also identifies the highlights and the opportunities of interconnection between people, their health and the totality of things. Outcomes of praxis for nurses also include personal and professional growth as well as discernment of holistic nursing practice.

Importance to My Practice

How would you like to fit in your patients' shoes? How would like to be cared and treated as you are in the stretcher where your clients and patients were? Parse's theory provided a different perspective of how we should perform our duties as a nurse and becoming as one and part of them not because it is our profession but to evolve as part of our patient's well being and capture what is not seen and feel the depths of their individuality. As an ER nurse I have seen different kinds of patients, families, culture, demands and cases in all walks of life, the alpha and the omega, and I must really say that I am privileged to witness the beauty and    mishaps of reality. Nurses are care machines, I believe that when you become a nurse you should be carrying unlimited care 24/7 because when you have this you are able to see things and feel situation differently as each patient requires it. Every patient should be treated uniquely and hollistically as needed for their care and faster recovery. Each nursing plan that you have for every patient might contain same requirements but should be able to deliver distinctly to each and everyone of them. When you possess this character then you must have been a part of a patient's success story therefore you have also touch a life and felt to be in the world of an individual only for the privileged few.
